The papers in this collection were brought together by Professor Sydney Nathans in conjunction with the controversy that arose in 1981 when Duke faculty members, along with alumni and alumnae, learned of president Terry Sanford's negotiations with former U. S. President Richard Nixon to locate the Nixon presidential library on the campus of Duke University, in what become known as the Nixon Library Controversy.

Terry Sanford, born James Terry Sanford, August 20, 1917, in Laurinburg, N. C. He was the second son of Cecil L. and Elizabeth Martin Sanford. He received the A.B. degree in 1939 and the J.D. degree in 1946 from the University of North Carolina.
